Hiroshima and Nuclear Power

Nuclear Plants

As I look at the image of humanity and horror, a reminiscent of the “Hiroshima Holocaust” that changed the course of nuclear researches and quests in the world, an unwelcome set of tears besieged my innocent eyes. A once quiet and peaceful city suddenly became a cremation zone where thousands of human bodies were laid to rest and plaques left among the survivors whose fate hangs on the balance of uncertainty with great despair for the future. The history of Hiroshima was re-written in just less than twenty seconds on the 6th and 9th of August, 1945. It metamorphosed into a ghost city as the thick fog from the machine of death tears through the nook and crannies of the city, leaving behind a trail, a devastation, and a field of massacre in its wake.

The names of Hiroshima and Nagasaki are known around the world---yet most people remain ignorant of the reality and the meaning of atomic destruction. The suffering experienced by the A-bomb victims was beyond imagination, a blow unprecedented in human history. The total deaths following the exposure of the bombs by the end of 1945 totaled 140,000 (+ or - 10,000) in Hiroshima and 70,000 (+ or - 10,000) in Nagasaki. This terrible horrific act took less than 20 seconds for both cities! “I could not understand why so many people had to die that day, and felt that those who died were the lucky ones, and those who survived have to live with the horror of that day” said Kinuko Laskey one of the survivors. These are the victims of poor decisions by the government that claims they have the interest of the people at heart, Victims of a demonic quest for power, victims of revenge as well as victims of a cold war. Wasted destinies of men.

In that same Japan, 66 years later, another major disaster erupted and claims thousands of lives, destroying properties worth billions of dollars. It once again left several cities without a house standing and many children orphaned by the deadly tsunami cum earthquake that tore through the city with reckless abandon. The Fukushima / Daichi power plants were not left out as that became another disaster that will linger for a long time. These cities and several ones kilometers away like Hiroshima and Nagasaki has became ghost towns as hundreds of thousand people have been evacuated to protect them from the exposures of the nuclear elements. Plants and some parts of their water bodies have been affected by leakages from these “technology-masked-death-box” which have rendered these cities unfit for human existence. The psychological effects of these can never be quantified. Hundreds of thousand people living in makeshift houses for months and probably won’t end anytime soon.

A review of Nuclear Energy usage should however be the top among the list of issues that needs world attention. There should be an Emergency World Power Plant Conference (EWPPC)” that will seek to address the issues of its usage, locations, operation, Safety as well as disaster-proof plants. These Nuclear Power Plants are scattered all over Europe, America and Asian countries. Some countries have started diversification into other sources of energy especially Renewable Energy while some are still adamant on the call for a nuclear plant review. Disasters happen every now and then all over the world. The question now is “ who is next?”

This is a delicate and difficult topic to handle. I can, I guess, argue for both sides of the issue. We all know of the horrific devestation and unequalled suffering inflicted upon the Japanese people by the detonation of these two devices. On the one hand this country felt it necessary to prevent the deaths of thousands or tens of thousands of American GI's in a fight for the Japanese homelands with a people who had demonstrated a willingness to die rather than capitulate. This was surely a sharp reminder of the ultimate supremacy of the Allied forces and the United States in particular. Germany, with it's incessant bombing of civilians in England had opened the door for the targeting of non-military targets as a means of destroying morale and the will to fight so a sort of no-holds-barred mentality had entered into the conflict. One can also not deny that the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki represented the ultimate avengeing for the 3,000 American lives lost in the sneak attack at Pearl. It is interesting to note that the great film Godzilla starring Raymond Burr was an American re-make. The Japanese original was intended to be an examination of the horrific effect of unleashed and unbridled use of nuclear energy with the caveat that this "genie" must never again be released from its bottle. Godzilla [the monster] was the direct result of rampant radiation and intended to represent the degree of devestation that could be wrought from it's overuse. Naturally in the post war world the Americans thought that this treatment would paint the victorious and righteous Allies in a most unfavorable light. Sad to think that with a handful of exceptions the world will never see the movie as it was originally intended. But then America has always been swift to devise ever better means of destruction and slow to realize the full impact of what it does.

This is quite an interesting addition. The hub wasn't basically to blame any quarters but to help in the quest to eradicate nuclear energy in any form because if the elements gets into the wrong hands...BOOOOOMMMM..
