Power of Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity and can also be referred to as:

• The Spirit of Christ (Romans 8:9, 1 Peter 1:11)

• The Spirit of Holiness (Romans 1:4)

• The Spirit of Our God (1 Corinthians 6:11)

The Trinity is one God in three persons, just as we have one Universe in three spatial dimensions, or as water is ice, water and steam. The symbol at left is an ancient symbol of the Trinity known as the “triquetra” and is made up of three arcs of a circle joined end to end.

The Holy Spirit takes up residence in the life of the Christian and does inward works producing wisdom and various fruits of the Spirit for personal inward transformation in grace. The Holy Spirit comes upon the believer to equip for “outward” works and heroic acts, miracles, prophecy and gifts of the Spirit to build up the Church. The Holy Spirit can be imparted by the laying on of hands, also the presence of the Holy Spirit can bring healing.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 :Do you not know that your body is a sanctuary of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body.

"Then the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance" (Acts 2:1-4).

Receiving The Holy Spirit

Acts 8:17 Then they laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

Acts 19:5-7 And when they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.

And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied. And they were in all about twelve men.

Receiving the Holy Spirit upon conversion and being baptized in the Holy Spirit are two separate and distinct experiences. The disciples received the Holy Spirit on the day of Jesus Christ's resurrection for the New Testament experience of salvation. At this moment the disciples passed from Old Testament salvation to New Testament Salvation. The Bible said:

"So Jesus said to them again, "Peace to you! As the Father has sent me, I also send you." And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit" (John 20:21,22)

Fifty days later they received the baptism of the Holy Spirit in the upper room. Jews then came to Jerusalem for the feast of Pentecost, heard the 120 speaking, declaring the wonders of God in their own national languages. Others could not understand them and said they were drunk.

Numerous books on the subject of Spirit-filling can be found in Christian bookstores nowadays, but the majority of believers still do not understand what it means to be “filled with the Holy Spirit.” Some do realize the importance of Spirit-filling, but since they lack knowledge about the Holy Spirit’s Person and work, they usually seek to be filled with the Spirit mainly for an emotional experience. Thus their spiritual lives are not strengthened and their service to God is not empowered by desiring an experience that only gratifies their “self.” Other believers, due to a bad impression made by those who go to emotional extremes, either deny or reject the idea of Spirit-filling entirely, and sometimes even ridicule it. Consequently, they forfeit the grace of God that could be theirs and have little ability to serve God and little perseverance when they do attempt to serve. Between these two groups are some believers who, not wanting to be involved in either extreme and unwilling to study the Scriptures to find out what the truth is, simply ignore Spirit-filling and its importance altogether. They allow prejudice and misinformation to rob them of this glorious blessing and greatly diminish their spiritual lives.

This is not the era of religion –where everything is done according to the dictates of the man behind the alter and not by the holy spirit, but that of the “Spirit-filled” or “spirit-led”, this is the only vehicle that will can the gospel to the point where God wants it to be, sharing the love of God to the nations of the world.

D. L. Moody, the Spirit-filled evangelist, also spoke about the need of the gospel servant to be Spirit-filled, writing, “I have lived long enough to know that if I cannot have the power of the Spirit of God on me to help me work for Him, I would rather die than just live for the sake of living.

And Spurgeon had similar thoughts, saying, “Let the preacher . . . burn his manuscript and depend upon the Holy Spirit. If the Spirit does not come to help him, let him be still and let the people go home and pray that the Spirit will help him next Sunday.”

Amen, Shalom,

Hallelujah, Glory and Praise to God.

Let His Spirit shine within us, outwardly upon others, as a beacon to this lost and weary world.

His Grace and Love is enough to lift any broken heart.

Praise be to the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.

Amen, Shalom.

The ultimate power of the Holy Spirit is in the revelation of "the great things that God has done", e.g., to Mary: the INCARNATION (Luke 1: 29-38); and to the whole world: the unique RESURRECTION or "experiencing the Son of Man going back up to the place where he was before" in his death on the cross (John 6: 62-64; 12: 32-33; 16: 5-15; 19: 30-37; Matt. 27: 50-56)
